Are You A Marketer Or A Business Owner?

There are marketers and there are business owners. Which one are you?
Some people are business owners, some are marketers, and sometimes they are both. My main question is, which one are you? I try to be both because I want to make sure I’m covered. I don’t always trust others to look out for me, so I learned marketing strategies and techniques to take care of myself. I am responsible for my own success.

I’m not here to brag, but I want to share what I do to take care of myself. One of the best skills I’ve learned is sales copywriting, which is really just salesmanship in print. It’s like being your own promoter and making sure people know what you offer. It’s important to learn how to talk about yourself and highlight your strengths. Promotion is an art, and every business owner should know how to do it. If you don’t promote yourself, no one else will, and you’ll stay invisible.

One of the worst feelings in the world is standing around waiting to be noticed at an early morning breakfast meeting, like a chamber event, waiting to be noticed. and that feeling of waiting to be noticed amongst the whole room full of clueless pedestrian business owners who can't wait to jam their business card in the palm of your hand and then jump onto the next person like fleas on a dog.

You end up feeling lost in these situations if you don’t know how to sell yourself. The worst feeling is being just average.

Marketing Is an Art—So Why Don’t More People Do It?

I’ve asked my clients in the past to market to me and treat me like a customer. I do this to see what they’re selling and how they pitch their prospects. In the last 20 years, not one person has actually marketed to me as if I were a client. This still surprises me. I don’t understand why more businesses don’t keep people updated. Some are so invisible that they don’t even send an email or newsletter to let me know what’s going on.

Marketing is all I do. I love rejection, and I eat it for breakfast. The more rejection I get, the closer I get to a sale, and I'm going to find somebody who's hungry for star Fame and Fortune just as much as I am, and I usually find them. We have a saying on the East Coast where I grew up, that when you get into neighborhood scraps. Don't just throw the first punch, but throw the first two punches. as a new kid growing up and being moved all over the country

I got into a lot of fist fights as a kid. And let me tell you something, it's never a great experience to get into a fight, but I will say that after you get punched in the head a couple of times, your body goes numb, and after that, you don't feel anything, and you just come out slugging. I hope that you never have that feeling, but I want you to know that it's completely made me emotionless to fear and rejection. I don't have any feelings anymore; in fact, I'm quite sure I've had all the sweetness knocked out of me.

I have a lot of material I send to clients and prospects, including podcasts, web videos, white papers, and PDFs. I also have plenty of testimonials to share until prospects are convinced to work with me. You should build up your own collection too.

Marketers Tell Stories and Share Their Successes

A business owner might just tell you what they sell or list prices on their website. Sometimes they say they care about family or promise to treat you like family. I always find that funny, because it doesn’t mean much to me. Honestly, my family isn’t always pleasant, so if you treat me like family, I might just run the other way.

Another thing people will do is they'll tell me how long they've been in business, like that means something. I want to hear how different you are. I want to hear how unique you are. I want to see how you can make a difference in my life.... that sales copy. Prove to me that you are the guy who can solve my problems. Many business owners don't even identify the problem, let alone try to solve it.

Some just want to be on the first page of Google and wait for the phone to ring. That’s their entire strategy.

There was a time when this approach worked, about 20 years ago, before the web was crowded with copycats and noise. Now, you have to work harder to stand out and prove you’re the right person for the job. That means sharing stories, testimonials, and real examples of people who are happy with your work. I want to see how good you are and if you can solve my problems. Can you?

My final advice: learn how to write sales copy and headlines that grab your prospect’s attention and turn them into buyers. If you can’t, hire a copywriter to help you.

The world is moving fast with AI, and it’s only going to speed up. If you’re still stuck in old habits by 2026, you need to get moving or risk being left behind. Our culture is accelerating, and you have to keep up with new technology. While you’re hesitating, your prospects are being sold to by others.
